Acclaimed stage actor and visual artist Bruce Turk unveils Coastal Approach, a solo exhibition of abstract paintings inspired by the raw intersection between humanity and nature along the Southern California coastline. Opening September 5 at 7:00 PM with a special reception and live reading, this evocative collection invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reimagine their relationship to the ocean.

Blending soft coastal tones—creams, greens, lavender, and muted blues—Turk’s work captures more than just beauty. Beneath the calm surface is tension: development vs. nature, stillness vs. disruption. “There is a physical and philosophical conflict happening just below the surface,” says Turk. “I’m interested in what it means to approach the ocean with reverence and responsibility—how our presence shapes the environment.”

Opening night features a staged reading from Edward Albee’s Seascape, performed by Turk and his wife, award-winning actress Katie MacNichol, bringing a layered theatrical lens to the evening. Admission is free, with a suggested $15 donation supporting the church’s arts programming, a portion of which will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation. All artwork is for sale.

Bruce Turk is known to San Diego audiences for his leading roles in six seasons of Shakespeare at the Old Globe, as well as numerous appearances at North Coast Repertory. With credits spanning Broadway, Lincoln Center, and major regional stages across the U.S., Turk’s visual art has developed alongside his acting for over 30 years, with exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and throughout San Diego.

Katie MacNichol, also a Broadway, West End, and regional theatre veteran, is known locally for her leading roles at the Old Globe and North Coast Repertory, as well as her podcast Act Like A Mother, where she interviews fellow artists navigating motherhood and creativity.
