During the Advent and Christmas season, First Lutheran Church once again lived into its calling to be “a light in the darkness and a guide to peace.” Through the Cradle of Hope fundraising effort, the congregation came together in generous response to the needs of mothers, children, and families facing hardship both globally and locally.

Originally launched as an Advent initiative rooted in our long-standing participation in the Welcome the Babe tradition, Cradle of Hope invited members to prepare for the birth of Christ by caring for those most vulnerable, both near and far away. This year’s effort intentionally combined global ministry through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America with support for local families in San Diego, providing essential baby items to mothers and children in need.

The goal for the season was to raise $4,000, enough to support three villages through these partnerships. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the congregation, that goal was not only met—but surpassed. By the end of the Christmas season, $6,800 had been raised.

As a result, First Lutheran Church will now be able to support five villages instead of three, significantly expanding the reach and impact of this ministry. These funds will help provide critical supplies for newborns and families, offering tangible expressions of care, dignity, and hope in places where resources are scarce.

Every year, believers are invited to commit their resources to God’s work through the local congregation. This Advent, the people of First Lutheran responded with faith, compassion, and generosity. We give thanks for all the ways our community continues to shine Christ’s light—locally and around the world.

As we look ahead in faith, may the Lord continue to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Thank you for helping make Cradle of Hope a blessing far beyond what we imagined.
